Bee-ing a Hero
Joaquin Mendoza, September 9, 2018
In our own little ways, ordinary people like us have opportunities to be just like our favorite superheroes: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman and many more. These heroes all have something in common, which is their capabilities of being able to save others.
The bee population had begun to rapidly decline. Big factors behind these would be industrial agriculture methods, parasites, climate change and the extensive use of bee-harming pesticides. With this knowledge, it is our responsibility to lend a hand in saving the bees, to stop their population decline and to bee a hero. Saving the bees can be done in our own small ways. Providing bee-friendly habitats in our own yards or in outdoor places would be one way to save the bees. Sunflowers, Apple trees and other plants help provide bees of their food necessary for their survival. This could help them with their normal day-to-day life, or during the rainy seasons, providing food reserves for their hives. Another way to help save the bees is eating bee-friendly. Pesticides, a highly toxic substance for bees, play a big role in most of the food we eat. If the food we eat that are produced using pesticides is lessened, then less bees will be harmed by the said substance. Organic food is produced without the use of pesticides, thus making organic food bee-friendly. Avoiding the use of insecticides in our own lawns also cooperates in saving the bees. Some insecticides can be toxic to bees and may kill them. In the other hand, some insecticides may also kill other weeds, which are crops bees need for food. Avoiding killing bees. Sometimes, children (and maybe some adults) tend to kill bees when they get sight of them. This action is unnecessary and does no help with saving the bees. By not doing this act and being a model and calling out those who do the act may help save the bees. These simple steps are not difficult to do. I, Joaquin Mendoza, am only 16 years old and I am living out these measures. I provide bee-friendly habitats, eat bee-friendly, avoid using insecticides, avoid killing bees and I do my part in saving the bees. Anybody can help. Everybody should help. We need YOU to bee the change, to bee the hero and to save the bees. https://insights.osu.edu/sustainability/bee-population |
