The World is Buzzing Around for the Bees
Carlo Joseph T. Echon, September 9, 2018
Bees are an essential part of the ecosystem, they pollinate the flowers and crops that sustain us. Humanity would fall without the aid of these little guys, to us they seem insignificant or a danger but their part in the natural cycle of the world can never be replaced. The recent decline in the bee population is something we should all take seriously. According to the US Department of Agriculture’s Survey 42.1% of the bee population controlled by beekeepers died off in 2014-2015 alone, imagine how much more bees have died off in the year 2018. But what has the world done to protect our little friends. Many government organizations and NGO’s are thinking of ways to protect and mitigate the damage in the bee population. Many notable people have also answered the call to protect the bees.
In 2015, government organizations like “The Environmental Protection agency” have started researching on the effects of pesticides on bees. Recently, the United States Environmental Protection Agency or the EPA has implemented a policy telling farmers to avoid the use of pesticides as research has shown that some pesticides also harm the bees. They are currently researching on new pesticide alternatives that could help keep the bees safe and still protect the crops from parasites.
In 2016, actor Morgan Freeman has converted his ranch in Mississippi into a haven for bees. He did this to help raise the population of the bees amidst the steady decline throughout the years. Other notable figures like the Obamas and the Pope have begun to help the bee population in their own way be it by owning a hive or just protecting the bees by giving them a place of sanctuary.
The world is starting to respond to this growing crisis. Although many policies and acts are still underway, the bees still need your help. Even through the smallest acts you can help the bees repopulate.
